Gokan kiho shisai ni miyo
Pay careful attention to the point of interchangeability

  • When entering a massugu sadoguchi, R enters, L immediately turns to corner, R meets L and sits. So 3 steps in, compared to mawari sadoguchi which is 4 steps.

History

  • Created by:
    • 7th generation Omotesenke oiemoto, Joshinsai Tennen Sosa (1706 - 1751)
    • His youngest brother, 8th generation Urasenke oiemoto, Yugensai Itto Soshitsu (1719 - 1771)
    • Several deshi (unnamed)
    • The two oiemotos’ Zen master, Abbot Mugaku Soen of Daitokuji (1721 - 1791)
  • Contemporary with the creation of the menjo system (menjo seido) and the concept of keiko.
  • Ostensibly, basic concepts were settled by 1741, but took another 10 years to finish.

CQ 48 - Hira Kagetsu (Theory) has a ton more around page 50. Should fill in more!

Notes

  • For hira-kagetsu, 4 bowls of usucha. (nani-tsuki kagetsu, 1 “tsuki” + 3 usucha)

Theory

  • General rule, stand with the foot you intend to cross the line with. (And always cross the line with the foot corresponding to the direction you intend to go. Up → R, Down → L).
  • Backing out:
    • When backing out on the fumikomi-datami into the lower half kagi-datami, stand with R and cross immediately with R!!! (Different from daime, where you stand with L, move to line with L, then cross with R).
    • However, when backing out from temae-datami (ie for last hana to drop off kensui onto fumikomi-datami), exiting temaeza is done like daime. Stand with L, L back to line, R cross. Total 5 steps.
  • (During zagawari)

Why backing out isn't weird maybe

After doing a bunch of Okuden, this doesn’t feel too outlandish too me. In those other temae, you’re seated pretty high up relative to the end of the tatami, so you need to take an approach step (left) before crossing the line (right).

But here, you’re already sitting low. You have just set down the kensui, and you are sitting nearly at the end of the mat. You do not need to take an approach step in order for right to have room to cross.

Entering

  • Sit at sadoguchi with sensu, bow, walk to seat. Leave sensu in rear of seat.
  • Entering 4.5-mat space is one-at-a-time, osaki ni.
    • 1st, 2nd cross at corner (with 1st taking 3x per hanjo)
    • 3rd, 4th take L path

Changing seats

  • Kuriage
    • When sho-bana stands with kensui, all guests shift up
  • Zagawari
    • After last chawan is returned, and everybody sorei, everyone stands
    • Walk like Japanese driving (L side)
    • 2x up, 3x down (ni agari, san sagari)

Exiting

  • When host stands with mizutsugi to exit, everybody stands (L foot) simultaneously and backs out to their original place.
  • First guest takes one step into kinin-datami (3x for each hanjo), but other guests walk directly to the exit.
    • 1st, 2nd cross at corner
    • 3rd crosses at inner kayoi-datami corner
    • 4th goes direct, no corners

Orisue

  • Bringing in, host turns orisue while sitting at sadoguchi (migi-mawari), holding 2h.
  • Passing orisue:
    • R takes from SIDES, place in L palm
    • R takes fuda
    • L reholds from sides to place down
  • Orisue positioning:
    • If orisue is still moving: 3 mei heriuchi
    • If orisue is stopped: 5 mei heriuchi
      • However! If it is stopped with shokyaku, it goes 5 mei x 5 mei herisoto.
      • However however! If shokyaku drew TSUKI and needed to take a kaefuda:
        • After taking kaefuda, shokyaku passes down to jikyaku 3 mei heriuchi.
        • Jikyaku immediately places orisue to the 5x5 herisoto position in their section (not heriuchi).
      • Another one: If 4th guest has kaefuda when new fuda are being drawn:
        • 3rd guest stops orisue 5 mei heriuchi.
        • Then, when current HANA calls out MATSU, 3rd guest “unlocks” it by moving it to 3 mei, which allows 4th guest to move out to kariza.
  • Kariza passing
    • Into kariza (4th to 5th): 90º migi-mawari, place out with R to their upper-R (holding sides)
    • Out of kariza (5th to 4th): 270º migi-mawari to their upper-L, 3-mei heriuchi (holding sides)

Orisue first-round handling

  • (Osaki-ni before taking the orisue, only for this round)
  • Tou takes fuda nigiriconde, places down orisue with same hand (R) to center heriuchi.
  • As tou places down, all guests pick up their fuda.
    • Only HANA calls out.
  • Tou re-holds fuda nigiriconde, takes orisue with R, returns fuda then passes. All guests follow suit.

Orisue general handling:

  • After hana calls out MATSU after placing bowl out, 4th guest passes orisue to kariza.

Orisue last-round handling

  • Passed sumikake (corner-kake) 3-mei heriuchi.
  • Taking with R, hold from top/bottom. Placing down with L, hold from sides.
    • (Reverse when orisue is coming back. L takes top/bottom, R down from sides)
  • Last guest must bring orisue sumikake to temaeza (leaving room for chawan), then retrieve it.

Fuda handling:

  • Fuda when upside-down, 1 mei heriuchi (center).
  • After calling out (if you got a tsuki or hana), place in same spot facing up.

Kaefuda:

  • If you get a “picture fuda”, you must take a kaefuda.
    • EXCEPTION: No kaefuda on last round.
  • Kaefuda (face-down) goes to R of “picture fuda” heriuchi.
  • If no numbered fuda left (ie 3rd + 4th got “picture fuda”), pass up with orisue open.
    • Open orisue, pinch R open side with R, place for upper guest to take.
    • Upper guests pinches L open side with L, places in fuda (right-side up is nice), passes back again with it open.
      • Pinch the side of the orisue farthest from your body.
    • Lower guest swaps for kaefuda. Pass to upper guest closed, who just directly passes to next guest without opening.
  • Fun note: Same thing as above happens if very first orisue draw, host gets hana.
    • Pass to 4th → pass back.
    • But then! Host passes directly to 3rd, not to 4th. Skip completely.
  • Kaefuda is held in R when walking to temaeza. Positioning when arriving at temaeza:
    • Round tana - Center front
    • Square tana / daisu - Front right corner of ten-ita
    • No tana
      • Furo - Front right corner of shiki-ita
      • Ro - Front right corner of robuchi

Procedure

In the mizuya

  • All members sit with fan to their right, pass orisue to your right with osaki ni.
  • Last person puts down orisue nigiriconde.
    • Call out: TSUKI, HANA, ICHI, NI, SAN
  • Fuda back, everbody bows.
  • Hana puts on fukusa, while everybody else enters the tea room.
    • Osaki ni before entering.
    • Bow, with your fan in front, to the room before standing and crossing the threshold.

Entering

  • Host enters naname (no fan). Sorei, host exits.
  • Guests take fukusa from kaichu, put on fukusa in unison. Everybody walks to 4.5-mat space, osaki ni before standing.
  • Host turns orisue at sadoguchi, places in front of shokyaku, returns to mizuya.
    • [?] TODO No douzo o-orisue wo? Seems no, but I’m having a hard time believing it. ➕ 2023-04-16
  • Host brings chawan to temaeza, then kensui only to upper left corner of fumikomi-datami.
  • Host stands with R, crosses with R, then goes to kariza.

Opening

  • Once host is seated, orisue is passed. (Osaki ni only during this first round).
  • Everyone take fuda, call out HANA only. Hana takes kaefuda.
  • Once orisue has stopped moving (only during this round), hana goes to temaeza.
  • As hana stands with kensui, guests kuriage.
  • On hishaku down, SOREI (even though usucha).

First through third rounds

  • Shobana starts making tea. When shobana takes chashaku, pass orisue.
    • (4th guest leaves it in the stop position).
  • Bowl goes out, guests pick up fuda.
    • Call out: TSUKI, HANA, MATSU (current hana)
  • 4th guest moves orisue out to kariza. Tsuki goes for chawan.
    • Note: Orisue takes precedence over drinking etc.
      • If you are still drinking, place bowl heriuchi to deal with orisue.
    • Note: If you need to move fuda to get to bowl:
      • Shokyaku places fuda to R
      • All other guests place fuda to L
  • Old hana comes back to kariza. Place kaefuda down, put in orisue, pass down to shokyaku.
  • Once new hana passes orisue, they may stand and go to temaeza.
  • Once new hana walks past old hana, old hana stands and goes to the empty seat.

Fourth round

  • Chashaku is picked up, orisue is passed sumikake.
  • After 4th guest draws fuda (or not), they bring the orisue sumikake to shimaibana (by R pinching the side), placing beside where chawan will be.
  • Bowl comes out, guests pick up fuda.
    • Call out is only TSUKI.
  • Tsuki drinks. Shimaibana takes kaefuda from tana, turns to kyakutsuki. Kaefuda to temae. Take orisue from top/bottom, put kaefuda, turn back out sumikake.
    • [?] TODO Kyakutsuki? Or full on facing guests? (ie what about furo) ➕ 2023-04-16
  • Shimaibana turns back, adds mizu. 4th guest retrieves orisue, passes back up to shokyaku sumikake (no kaefuda).
  • Last tsuki keeps chawan until orisue stops moving, then returns.

Closing

  • Shimaibana takes chawan, places temae. Sorei, zagawari.
  • Shimaibana finishes shimai, walks backward a la daime (stand L, L → R cross), places kensui to corner.
  • Shimaibana returns to their seat. Once they pass the host at kariza, host stands and walks to kensui. Sit, pick up kensui, then exit to mizuya (turning around as you would if you exited temaeza in hira-demae).
  • Once host takes chawan out of room, 1st guest brings orisue for host (leaving 5 mei herisoto, where chawan usually goes).
  • Host returns with mizutsugi. Turn to face guests (completely), sorei.
  • Host takes orisue, places into kaichu.
    • TODO take video of orisue into kaichu. ➕ 2023-04-16
  • Host turns back, adds water.
  • When host stands with mizutsugi, all guests stand and step backward to their 8-mat spots.
  • Host re-enters at an angle. Sorei. Then in unison, guests put fukusa kaichu.
  • Everybody puts fans in front. Osaki ni, exit.
